Nigerian Education Loan Fund (NELFUND) takes student loan applications through its official website, nelf.gov.ng.
The 2025/2026 window opened on 23 October 2025, was extended to 27 February 2026, and payments for that session have continued in batches since.
The latest confirmed news is about how loans will be paid. Speaking at a press briefing in Abuja on Wednesday, 28 October 2026, NELFUND Managing Director Akintunde Sawyerr announced a parent verification portal and a digital wallet system that are expected to take effect in the 2026/2027 session.
If you are searching for the registration portal or a payment date, be careful: many pages online show “2026” dates that are simply last year’s dates with the year changed. This guide separates what is confirmed from what is not, and explains how to apply and how the money reaches your school.

What Is the NELFUND Student Loan?
NELFUND provides interest-free loans to qualified Nigerians for tuition and other fees, charges and upkeep while they study at approved tertiary institutions and vocational or skills institutions in Nigeria. Support for approved institutional fees and the separate upkeep allowance are handled as different parts of the scheme.
NELFUND has also said that taking the loan is voluntary, not compulsory, for students who do not need it.
Is the 2026/2027 Registration Portal Open?
NELFUND has not commenced student loan registration for the 2026/2027. Here is what the sources show:
- The last window with confirmed dates is for the 2025/2026 session: opening on Thursday, 23 October 2025, with a scheduled close on Saturday, 31 January 2026, later extended to 27 February 2026.
- Some institutions announced their own reopened windows for students who missed the deadline during 2026, so check your school’s notices.
- One campus news blog reported a notice giving a 2026/2027 application period ending on 31 December 2026, but it also said students should wait for the portal to be activated.
Until NELFUND publishes the 2026/2027 dates on its own channels, treat any specific date as unconfirmed. The fund has told institutions in earlier cycles to upload verified student records before the portal opens, so expect the announcement to follow that pattern.
Who Can Apply?
The loan is open to newly admitted and returning students of accredited tertiary institutions nationwide. Your school must have uploaded your records to the NELFUND Student Verification Portal before you can apply successfully.
What You Need to Apply
- A valid email address, used to create your account
- Your National Identification Number (NIN)
- Your Bank Verification Number (BVN)
- Your JAMB registration number, or your matriculation number if you are a returning student
- For first-year students, an admission number or JAMB registration number can be used for verification in place of a matriculation number
How to Apply, NELFUND Student Loan 2026
- Go to the official website at nelf.gov.ng and click “Apply Now” when the window is open.
- Create an account with your email address.
- Verify your identity and student status with your NIN, BVN and JAMB or matriculation number.
- Complete your profile and confirm your institution.
- Request the loan for institutional charges, and for upkeep if you want it.
- Upload any documents requested and submit.
- Log in later to check your application status and any pending verification.
If your application shows as pending, it often means verification or processing is still going on, and the cause is frequently that the school has not yet confirmed your enrolment or fee details.

Disbursement Date: When Is the Loan Paid?
There is no single national payment date. Disbursement for the 2025/2026 session has been going out in batches, school by school, after each institution confirms enrolment and uploads fee details.
In February 2026, for example, NELFUND reported paying almost ₦400 million to Delta State University, Abraka.
Several factors decide when you are paid:
- Whether your application was approved
- Whether your school has verified you and uploaded its fee details
- Whether your school’s academic calendar has been submitted to NELFUND, since the fund uses calendars to schedule payments
Tuition and Upkeep Are Different
Approved institutional charges go to your school. The upkeep allowance is separate and is paid to eligible students. Do not assume that a tuition payment means upkeep has also been paid, or the other way round.
What Is Changing in 2026/2027
At the 28 October 2026 briefing, NELFUND set out new measures meant to stop what Sawyerr called “double-dipping”, where a student receives a loan for tuition and also collects the same fees from parents. The changes, expected to take effect in the 2026/2027 session, include:
- A parent verification portal: parents will be able to enter a child’s matriculation number to see whether the fees have been paid, without seeing the amount or other sensitive details
- A digital wallet payment system: students will authorise tuition payments directly to their institutions, so the money is not received as cash or sent to a personal bank account. The payment token can only be used at that school
- Regional workshops: NELFUND plans to hold re-education workshops across the six geopolitical zones for students, parents and institutions
Executive Director Mustapha Iyal said the payment system was being piloted. The measures do not stop students whose parents can afford fees from applying; they are meant to prevent duplicate tuition funding.
Repayment
NELFUND describes the loan as interest-free, with flexible repayment that depends on income and a grace period before repayment starts.
Several guides report that repayment begins two years after the National Youth Service Corps (NYSC). Check the terms on the portal before you accept.
